We used to use a similar sort of trolley for moving the bells around at the John Taylor Bellfoundry, here in Loughborough (also home of Herbert Morris). The cart was articulated at the front, with solid cast wheels, and dated back probably to when the foundry was set up in the town.

I am fascinated with the amber hammer type of thing you found! I was watching a program on dying of wool in natural colors. The person used an exact same type of hammer to push the wool into the dye bath- heavy end to use in the dye bath. But amber wouldn’t absorb the dye and you need a weighted end to push the wool into the dye. The program I watch was filmed in the Shetland islands. Maybe your item was used in the wool dying business and thrown away because the handle was broken?

If I wasn't full of arthritis and fxxxxd I'd help you get it out, how about putting some floatation devices to it at low tide, digging some mud away, anchor it to something on the shore, and then when the tide comes in the floats should help pull it from the mud, but being anchored it'll stay where it is more or less...

Great mudlark Si and some great finds especially the trolley would be great to see it out of the mud so I'd say definitely have a go at getting it out I'm sure the museum would be interested in it you have so much history along the Thames would really love to spend a day looking along the foreshore although I live in Devon so not easy to do maybe one day, your visit to the museum was very interesting great content and viewing mate

The foreshore is interesting along there at silvertown. The area below where you found the trolley being the old entrance to royal victoria dock and later used as a base by tug boat company General Marine until 2020 with many boats scrapped there in the 1990s. The trolley is an amazing find and should certainly be recovered! Keep us posted
